The Nissan Titan XD is fat. Like, really fat. Weighing in around 7,000 pounds, it’s far heavier than its half-ton competition. With that in mind, the new Titan should be a lot more appealing to people that just want a truck and don’t have dreams of heavy-duty hauling.
For those that need a refresher, the new Titan looks a lot like its big brother, but the size differences are immediately noticeable. At 139.8 inches long, the Crew Cab’s wheelbase is nearly a full foot shorter than the 151.6-inch XD model, and it’s shorter overall, too. The XD is over 20 feet long, but moving to the smaller truck cuts out 14.8 inches of pickup truck from the overall package. This is still going to be a substantial vehicle to pilot down the road, though, since Nissan retained the 79.5-inch width of the XD model.
Perhaps the biggest change from the XD model comes under the hood. Nissan will only be offering its new, gas-powered, 5.6-liter “Endurance” V8 under the smaller Titan’s hood – no Cummins diesel here. The engine is good for 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, which puts it right in the meat of the half-ton pickup segment – it outguns Ford’s 5.0-liter (385 hp and 387 lb-ft) and Chevrolet’s 5.3-liter V8s (355hp/383 lb-ft), is roughly equal to Ram’s 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (395 hp/410 lb-ft), and like everything else in this segment, is overpowered by General Motors’ 6.2-liter Ecotec V8 (420 hp/460 lb-t). Its seven-speed automatic also parks it in between the F-150’s six-speed and the eight-speed autos in the Ram and Chevy Silverado.
Finally, where the Titan XD is limited to one bed length and body style, the standard Titan has a lot more variety. The Crew Cab, shown here, will later be joined by Single and King Cab models, and will offer three different bed lengths (5.5, 6.5, and eight feet). On top of that, the same range of trim levels – S, SV, Pro-4X, SL, and Platinum – will be offered.
