Next Generation Nissan Z rumored to have a Hybrid Engine

Nissan’s Z car lineup is one of the most historic recognizable model in the industry. Spanning two brands and a number of sporty coupes, Nissan knows a new Z is inevitable, and is in the process of building one.

According to Motoring, the seventh generation Z, aka the Z35, will be sharper and more precise than the model it replaces. It’s even going to be lighter and have a smaller, yet more powerful engine.

Nissan will push the new Z to be more of a “global” sportscar than ever before. The new platform will be designed with a retractable hard-top roof a la BMW Z4 and Mazda MX-5, or even a targa top. The new look will go along with the aforementioned smaller engine, likely a turbo 2.0-liter as a base, and a hybrid engine following right after that.

As for the top of the range, things get even more interesting. The report says that Nissan will use a Mercedes-sourced 3.0-liter V6 that should produce about 330 horsepower. This rumor likely stems from the Mercedes-Nissan partnership signed back in 2011.

As with any rumor, we’ll take this with a grain of salt. But if all this turns out to be true, we could be seeing the return of the Z car we know and love. And that’s a good thing.
